I have seen plenty of scumbag was controled by magic, brainwashed and stuff so "it wasn't his fault". And I hardlyever buy it because it's rare the occasions they do forgivable things.
That degree of cruelty and planning is way too deep. It requires persistance and patience. It's not even forgivable for an enemy. So he thought she stole his dead mom's nacklace and trapped him into marrying her. Big deal. They lived together for over 5 years. He had more than enough time to get to know her and investigate things. To at the very least doubt if what he was doing was right. Throw him in the ML trashbin, lock it and lose the key.
Besides, in magic manipulations plots, they usualy only go as far as their own cruely allows. So if that's the case, he really deserves whatever punishment even if magicaly cursed or something.
