I think it's a Japanese people's habit, that they usually don't talk much about their real thoughts, even when they're dating. Japanese are really reserved when it comes to giving opinions or express themself. Foreigners when dating Japanese often said that they don't really know what their lover's thinking though. Just my point of view.
