Why do these authors think rape is a good trauma to build characters ? There are so many "bad things" that can be used to grow a character. Why rape ???
Because it’s quick and easy, and then some people always forgive the character if he has a quote of quote “redemption arc”. Haven’t you wondered why most stories have side stories of the rapist? It’s the author saying “oh this guy has a terrible backstory, so what he did is justified”
Rape, incest and terrible age gapes in Bl are so normalized it’s hard to find something normal, and it’s not just Bl manhwa. Look at Super lovers, it’s literally grooming and step incest and it managed to get an anime. And despite what people think about manga, there is a huge problem with sexualizing children.
But since they are characters, I don’t take it like if it happened in real life. I just question the author and wonder if they have some weird issues personally.
Attractiveness is also a key point. Despite what a lot of people think “oh looks don’t matter” it really does. People are more likely to defend and forgive a attractive character than an ugly one, that is just the truth. That is why they make all the characters pretty and the bad ones ugly. (Like certain companies)
I didn’t expect for this to be this long but I wanted to express how normalized this is. It is hard to find gems in a sea of coal but I hope you found your answer in my explanation.
I feel like a part of it is also to make fetish content (because some ppl actually like non-con stuff) and also because writing events like this is quick, and doesn't need many plot points or thinking. It's just *insert something obviously wrong* for storyline building, rather than a fully fleshed out character with different diverse struggles that builds them and makes them grow and makes them feel more individualized and relatable. (likable too if we're being honest)
Personally I stopped reading "psychological bls" because of this reason. If the main character ever has any struggle, then it's always the same few over and over again. Debt, rape, sex trafficking or homophobia, sometimes it's literally all in one. Not that these can't be a part of a good story, I've seen a few good ones that don't revolve around gooning that I quite liked, however most of the time if it does involve it, it therefore falls flat
Yes I completely agree. I can’t even say it was better before, because stuff like this was always around. Now it’s just extremely normalized. Most psychological Bl’s (if you can even call it that) has so much unnecessary rape/gangrape it’s insane. A psychological story can have so much potential due to its wide variety of subjects. It could be horror, it could be just about mental health, and so much more.
Yes exactly. But now you see the phycological tag + any kind of romance and more than half of the time, it's just "dark romance" rape with the same 3 character troupes. The story is never good too unless it's heavily plot focused (so that way they can't use troupes and niche fan service to please readers into staying, actually having to put an effort into their story)
however even then, sometimes I still see authors messing up
And most of the time they forget the entire plot, just to focus on some other character. Or they add unnecessary drama. I understand that suspense is one of the things that keeps readers engaged but ‘good’ suspense should mainly be on the plot. I am not saying that surprises aren’t good. I just feel like these aren’t surprises anymore if they keep on doing it.
One other thing is Mafia tropes and how they romanticize it or when people use this as their scapegoat. The Mafia are cruel individuals who take advantage of vulnerable people, I’ve seen people use the defense that ‘oh he is born into a mafia family and he is a mafia member so the rape is normal.’ That is sometimes true, but that doesn’t explain why he suddenly change so quickly for a single character.
It is highly unlikely that a bad person would change, if they could the world would be all sunshine and rainbows. It is the fact that authors plant this into people’s head that ‘overpossesive people who harm you are good.’ I’ve also seen people on social media say ‘I want a black flag or red flag boyfriend’ no you do not. It’s a abusive relationship and no one wants to be in that.
