I just think MC isn't ready for a relationship. It's not that he doesn't trust in ML's love. It's MC nonexistent self-confidence/worth/love that makes him think he doesn't deserve ML. Inadvertently, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy of ML finally leaving him.
