Im really disappointed with cliffs ending. I feel like the way he turns into an abuser is really not in his character at all (and totally different from the ending in the novel). It feels like others got redeemed whilst he didn't, despite also being under the influence of the system to love reeze. I feel a better ending would've been for him to realise that without the system he doesn't love her (not bc she's changed her looks, but bc even tho he wants a relationship with her, she only liked him when he was the handsome noble son of Duke)
His archetype is that hes a spoiled entitled kid who always got what he wanted, not once did he pity his brother. He was never a good person. Him turning abusive is perfectly aligned with him. Someone who had everything, now has nothing, and has no one to take his anger out on.
Him turning abusive is his way of grasping onto the little power he has over the situation now that things arent going his way.
Idk to me it almost felt like a cop out - like an easy for the villian girl to suffer. The most disgusting aspect of it is that I almost felt bad for a (albeit fictional) guy who abuses someone.
Like I mentioned in my first comment, having cliff realise he doesn't love that girl would've been a great 'punishment' for both him and the girl. I feel like physical violence can harm you but often times small comments or words last much longer. As well as this, she becomes a victim of sorts the moment Cliff became abusive - which is likely not the 'clean cut' ending of villians punished and heroes happy ending the author was aiming for. (Often, authors try to make villians redeemable or give reasons for their evil, its clearly not what author is doing here)
I just feel bad for everyone involved in this case. The girl for her strange shitty obsession and the abuse she's getting and Cliff who's mind was manipulated and then thrust into a new world where he's alone with this person he doesn't actually know. I really very much prefer the novel ending over this bullshit.
(Sorry for long reply, i just need to rant )
I do get where you’re coming from for Cliff, but I still feel like the girl deserved her ending after tormenting the 12 girls stuck with her. The last one kinda ended up becoming her abuser, but I’m glad the rest found their peace.
Here’s my cop out for this cop out: this Cliff is not the original but a copy who gives author hope, but turns into a nightmare per the girls’ revenge.
And the original Cliff lives out his life per the original novel.
Mc's brother deserves better, istg if ghe author tries to push them together after all this shit, I'm gonna blow my casket
Seriously the switch up is crazy
