They are half siblings on the mother’s side, but they think they are distant cousins by law. I don’t think they ever slept together, but Sangjin had an unhealthy attraction towards MC that developed into an obsession.
The mother cheated on the dad, was stealing money from him, and got pregnant by another guy. Dad killed the other man before Sangjin was born, but pretended to forgive her if she gave up the baby to the people he chose (who he could control and wouldn’t develop any genuine affection for Sangjin).
The dad wrecked Sangjin’s life to prove to himself that his parents’ “rotten blood” would show he was an inferior person, while acting as an “example of how not to be” that would propel his son to greater heights.
He separated them because MC wasn’t shaping up like he wanted, and the emotional distress on Sangjin from being cut off from an important person was icing on the cake for him.
They originally wanted to turn Sangjin into a drug addict, but he refused to take anything, so they dosed his food and cigarettes until he was already addicted, then supplied him with as much as he wanted so he wouldn’t be able to get clean.
I didn’t think the dad ordered MC to die, just berated him for “not even being able to do that right” once he survived.
The dad got away with everything because he had tons of money and resources to cover everything up
