The dresses of the women are drawn to look like robe a la francaise, or the sack-back gown of the 1750-1770's. Structured and stiff heavy fabric with triangular stays (which are like corsets, but conical in shape) and wide hip panniers.
The new dress that she and Blanche are wearing is based on the 'robe en chemise' which became popular in the 1780's which DOES look like a nightgown because it was very soft with light layers and less structure because no hip-panniers/stomacher etc.
They are going to be so comfortable.
(Side note: since the light layers were so fine and women didn't wear as many petticoats- it was considered extremely scandalous to wear a robe en chemise.)
Thanks for the info! Those other ladies are ready to pass out from the heat and discomfort of their heavy corset requirement dresses. Fl and Blanch will float through the room in light comfort. I wish they’d used darker fabric to lesson the shock of the nightgown appearance. Also, they were looking for horrible things to say anyway because of OG fl’s terrible personality. But, once the emperor comes out and they take in the big picture, I bet they’ll all want this type of dress.

You are welcome!
The robe en chemise (also a robe a la reine) was made of a very light, almost sheer, white muslin. All image examples are white, with only sashes of darker colors.

Regardless of color I’d wear that any day over those confining dresses.
This is a historical design-
