Tbh if I was the Duke, I'd kill Lauren in the original too. Cause he never really fell in love with Lauren, he fell in love with the one who wrote the letters and because of his misunderstanding, he ended up killing that person. And ultimately, the reason for his misunderstanding was Lauren. Cutting off his tounge so he may not speak, so he can keep up the illusion that Lauren was the one behind those words. Kinda sad.
