Why do people put 'power' in words like [insert n-word] and [insert gay f-word slur]?

Long story short, the n-word and f slur both have years and years of history behind them that make it offensive to the minorities it's directed to. And I'd say that it's hard to just take away the power the word has since you can't decide what a minority group finds offensive or not offensive. It's still disrespectful for them basically.   reply
