I haven't read the novel but something peaked in my mind. Sacha had a traumatic incident happened which resulted in his brain immediately locking up some information. What if, he kept forgetting Karel was in prison and just thought he left.
Of course this may not be correct but it makes sense in my head.
Also, I personally do not hate Sasha or Karel. They both have had terrible things happen to them. Karel was Sasha's last peice of hope. Losing him and then having to stay in a home where you are constantly reminded of him would be torture on a person who is in deep trouble with their mental health.
Yall need to take a step back and have empathy. There is no bad guy in this situation, they are both individuals dealing with the shit they were handed and unfortunately some of those parts have effected the other.
