i started rereading from ch1 and oh my god of course he couldn't leave yuri alone she is just as emotionally unstable in such similar ways as his mom is (without the extreme angry mood swings and physical abuse) he probably went into fawning (as in fight. flight freeze, fawn the four trauma reactions) mode instinctively as parentified children tend to do. this is so well written.
