I don't think the angle is to make us sympathetic to Caesar's character. I think it's clearly embodied by the story that one's actions are their own responsibility (example Freya). All of Caesar's sins and atrocious acts are his to bear, there is no washing away of that. But this backstory puts into perspective what shaped this villain and his twisted form of love. This makes him a much better fleshed out character instead of just a "psycho incest abuser". I like that this story fleshes out so many characters that they feel like real people with motives, aspirations and ideologies so we can actually understand their actions instead of them just being stated (x did this and y did that just because). The father is horrible. Caesar is horrible too, nobody's saying otherwise, I don't think the author wants us to like him at all. But these chapters explain why he's like that, because I believe the author wants a story that feels real instead of a world where characters behave solely on the lot's whim. Characters can be evil while having a backstory and a personality guys, open your minds a little bit. So I'd suggest everyone to give a chance to the author's attempts at building this story. Have patience, this story is one of the best I've read in a while.
