short and cute. they never told us why the guy accepted all the confessions and dumped them within a week though. i guess it's bc he wanted to get over his crush but never could?
that noncon scene came out of left field and wasn't even necessary for the plot tf
one of my favorite little easter eggs:
vol. 4 ch. 26 p. 17. is a reference to gustav klimt's "the kiss," originally exhibited under the title, "liebespaar" (the lovers).
low key i miss the 90/00s era manga like this, saiyuki, getbackers, etc. the art style of that period is so distinctive, and with it, a common mood to the stories..
ummm that's my emotional support gay cyborg vampire priest
i've always been iffy about this one. the flashback sequences to their time in the moto gang are definitely the most interesting part of this story, but a 23 year old sleeping with a 16 year old (15 when they met) is still grody as hell. when tetsuya says he thought he was an adult at that time but he was actually immature, i fully agree bc everything about the way he approached tetsuya back then and even in the present is self-centered fuckboy behavior. like "you won't stop me with that kind of strength. how long do you think i've waited?" is an INSANE thing to say to the guy you're trying to win over. why would YOUR FEELINGS dictate THE OTHER PERSON'S CONSENT??? smh
there's a pervasive tender melancholy throughout this story that goes so perfectly with the rainy mood. like when it's a dark and stormy afternoon and you're lying in bed thinking about the past, and feeling a little empty and stuck and restless. that feeling. and it's very much what one's early 20s feel like—not a child anymore, but barely an adult, trying to figure out where to go from here. short and sweet, i enjoyed this.
just binged this and i have two thoughts:
- it takes a village fr
- i am happily single and child free but damn if i don't want what they have

i'm enjoying this a lot more than i thought i would. i thought it'd be another light-hearted chaebol x spunky guy story, and it is, but it's also so much more than that. the story is very subtle and sensitive with the way it portrays child abuse and sexual assault/coercion. seong-ah's high-functioning depression is also handled very well and feels real and relatable to me—because depression doesn't always look like not being able to get out of bed or take care of yourself; sometimes it looks like being able to get everything done but feeling miserable while you do it. feeling stuck, trapped in your life, and like no one really sees you beneath the performance. it can look like not necessarily wanting to die, just not wanting to suffer or not seeing the point anymore (passive suicidal ideation). i have struggled with this myself and it's just really refreshing to see it portrayed in a way that doesn't glamorize mental illness and trauma or make it a cliche. and to have someone finally say i see how you've suffered, you've worked hard, you deserve to have been protected, is profoundly cathartic. the regular emphasis on consent (makes sense considering seong-ah's trauma) is a huge bonus as it's sadly not the norm for most BL series. i really recommend this!
i love this story to pieces but this has got to be the worst example of power creep/stakes escalation in the shounen genre bc how did we go from inter-species power struggle (which was great) to nuclear annihilation. rai was always a jesus figure, literally dispensing judgment on sinners, and in degrading his body in doing so, also literally dying for our sins, etc. the most martyr-coded MC ever. but like... attack satellites? nukes? it's just got kind of nuts at the end there, and i know it's more realistic for humanity to be relying on those weapons of mass destruction rather than the sci-fi/fantasy stuff going on, it breaks a lot of the immersion by being /too real/. while i'm happy the characters we love came back from being fridged in the epilogue, that's even more bizarre bc there's literally no explanation for it.. and it cheapens the suffering and sacrifice rai went through throughout the entirety of this series. i believe the writer when he says this was planned from the start but i have to say that weird choices were made lol.

i love jian yi so much, and i hope OX can turn the story's attention towards his and zhan zhengxi's side of things soon, probably when more of the mystery and plot hit. it's been the he tian and mo guan shan show for quite a while.
