After looking further. Artist was probably often drawing art of older teen/adult characters. The protagonist is a child and certain features drawn adult-like (long face, defined jaw line, etc.) instead of being child-like (shorter face/chin, round)
I swear to gos it was only shounen ai before and now it's yaoi. I was like huh strange, didn't think about it too much... but after that last chapter I see why.
