I think the kid's sickness started before he met the ML again, so it's likely an actual disease, not some manipulation tactic at the cost of a child...
It's a genetic illness. That runs in families with hyper traits. I'm assuming it's from the alpha father's side, since he is a dominant (hyper?) Alpha.
