I dont think the chapter was to justify his shitty actions or sympathize with him, but to explain why he acts this way from his hatered towards alcohol, having a soft spot for elderly people and his craziness/obsession with winning. i dont understand why people are arguing over this

A 100% with you on this. This chapter or his past are not particularly a justification. But at the same time I think that he also did have people like the coach and his mom if not showcase how a healthy relationship works but they did show him the bare minimums of consistency and care and that he deserves to be treated well simply because he exists.
The coach did not take him in to profit off of him nor did his mother (coachs) feed/care for him for an ulterior motive.
I think thats where the disparity comes in, J did experience some sort of bare basic decency in his formative years. That he simply did not show D.
Again lol this is a work of fiction but I really liked your comment from all the ones I saw.

Ofc this will lead to discussions and the backstory is obviously necessary to his eventual redemption. I just don't understand why some ppl are acting like he's a REAL person. You can hate him or forgive him, that's fine. We're gonna have different opinions about this and thats normal, but spending time arguing with ppl online who you don't even know is sad and pathetic.
Dinner? Hope you'll eat each other out.
