I am so conflicted about this manga. In "Smells Like Green Spirit," Yanagada-sensei terrified me, although Saburo-sensei thoroughly portrayed him with justice and kindness. I must say that the part where he tries to abuse Mishima-kun and keeps repeating: "Let me in, let me in," really highlighted the pathetic and dark sadness of this scene. I was grateful that a manga took seriously the subject of rape and sexual assault, which are so normalized in yaoi, but then this new manga comes along, saying that "a child saved him". It generates a lot of aversion in me, but I still read it all.

And despite everything, I recognize that Saburō Nagai is a great manga artist and that, overall, the story is very well done. It's like the theme of Nabokov's Lolita. I don't know what to make of stories that deal with pedophilia; I don't know how to judge their literary quality. I think the subject is rightly considered taboo because there can be no consensus in a relationship between an adult and a child; it's just abuse.

And yet, Saburo-sensei shows us a moment of genuine connection, in the sense of being able to truly see the other, between a pedophile and a systematically abused child... and manages to establish a dialogue between two deeply wounded souls... and, lord, it's a rather thorny subject; it's like a very dark and obscene fantasy in a psychoanalytic way. No wonder the title of the manga is Hallaway to the Abyss. I'm still conflicted by it.
