just caught up to the novel translations and ngl i think it was a little disappointing? this story is first and foremost a romance. my mistake for forgetting that it’s a fantasy romance novel/manhwa, nothing more than that. i was expecting a little more depth in the plot and the themes. like more depth info abt the homunculi (?), alchemy, magic, exiles, dragons, world tree, the politics, etc. but it was all really simple?? they were just used as means for the events and plot points rather than to build a foundation for the world, which can be good sometimes but i felt like there was just a lot of everything and not enough that made the world feel alive and intentional
it basically turns into a story simplified to betty does smth shitty and mc overcomes her all the way up until the end. ml becomes more of subordinate to the fl’s plans, which makes sense bc he did turn back time bc he just wanted her love more than the autonomy of not being a slave
ofc i haven’t finished the story yet but i think it’s pretty clear after reading some spoilers that what ive read so far remains pretty consistent. i think this story would’ve shone the brightest if the conflicts of the world were at the forefront. the story really loses its initial grabbing point of the homunculi’s revolution against their enslavers and the implications of that and focuses to the story of how the fl strives to gain the throne to just make reforms. there’s nothing wrong w that, just again not really what was expected
in the end, it’s another fl who ends up turning the past, using that info to gain leverage, and having to fight against her wicked sister. it does good with adding a few new things to spice up this typical progression like the introduction of homunculi though
TLDR; story is great for what it actually is, aka a korean fantasy romance, but i’m disappointed that it was a typical fantasy romance despite that being the genre lol. just want to let ppl know so if anyone goes in w similar expectations they won’t be let down

If you put it that way, I'm a bit disappointed too. I just think of it as Betty is the real cause of the downfall of the empire so the story is focusing more on how to counter her evil plots. And why would the homunculus revel when their living conditions are improving without them doing anything? But I agree with you. I actually skip the parts where Mikael and Eve are being lovey-dovey. Haha
And the latest development with Rosie? Cringe.

to ppl who haven’t read the novel, DO NOT read this if you’re expecting a smooth ride… because you are not in for one once his memories come back and will get angry and frustrated especially having to wait weeks for chapters. come back when it’s finished years from to maintain your sanity

not sure what type of spoilers you want but once he gets his memories back he becomes a real pos he destroys smth that means A LOT to her and verbally abuses her. there’s context behind his anger ofc that’s fueled by misunderstandings and doesn’t excuse the shit. his brother is a pos too so warning abt that too. he leaves at some point but our fl ends up working for his fam which forces their interactions again. basically turns into a situation where he hates her but feels attracted to her. i won’t spoil why he hates her tho but it’s connected to him destroying things before. our fl is just gonna go through constant emotional turmoil. she gets pregnant at some point rip. he has his little redemption arc though at the end of the story?? it’s controversial tho, some ppl think it was a great redemption arc and others think that he should never be forgiven so yk. definitely an angsty story. i tried to give spoilers without actually telling every tiny detail so if u continue then it’ll still be a trip
I do not recommend if you’re not willing to forgive shitty male leads

this has got to be written by a man targeting a more male gaze but that’s okay bc this lesbian (aka me) will happily crush on the fl

whaaaat i was thinking the complete opposite. Ive read MANY romances and those written by men usually sexualise the woman a lot and the man will be nerdy and/or downright ugly or plain. Here they're fairly equally attractive, none of them are sexualised and both are written equally well so i think the author has done a great job at appealing to both genders

Is this worth reading guys? comments seem iffy

I was worried too after reading the comments, but honestly I read the whole thing in one day and really enjoyed it. They get together officially on chapter 62 I think and the supernatural plot line is still very much there. Can kinda see the author setting up for a misunderstanding trope soon though
where do you guys thing this ranks against other popular shounen of this era? (ex, jjk, csm)
I'm definitely biased as fuck, but I'd rank Kagurabachi in, at the very least, top 5 of best new-gen shounen mangas, dare I say it could even reach the top 3. It has honestly been a pleasure to read since chapter 1, it gets better with each new chapter, the power system is, in my opinion, pretty inventive, there's no annoying ass fan-service or ecchi elements, the ensemble of characters is memorable and everyone is at the very least interesting to read about, THE FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHIES?? ABSOLUTE KINO, and the art, whilst it was a bit rough around the edges at the start, has improved so, so much, and ughhh I gotta stop glazing it, it's just, mwah, perfection, 10/10.
What about you, though? Where would you place it at?
outside of what i wrote tho, i agree with everything else you mentioned. i like the power system but wish we had more of a grasp of the limits and functionality of sorcery. i really like the cast of the story including the villains. sojo was a great first obstacle and none of the other villains so far have hit quite as well as him imo, unless we count samura’s temporary villain arc. i think this story is still in its really early phase though so i think as we get like idk at least to chap maybe 150 that i’ll feel more satisfied with it. tbf i don’t normally read manga so i dont have a lot to reference in comparison to this story so it may be a lot higher up in ranking than i realized
omg i just realized the whole first response i wrote didnt post, only my second wtf basically i said my main issue with the story is that chihiro could’ve been written better. he doesn’t have much psychological turmoil despite his insane amount of trauma and experiences. it would be nice to see him struggle emotionally a lot more rather than just with battles. i also have a slight issue with how character emotions are expressed in general but i think it’s just from the author’s lack of experience tbh. the best stories are the ones where you can feel the pain and heartbreak of the characters and i mean the conflicts were written very well but the emotions in the conflict feel like they’re lacking a little smth that i can’t really explain
there’s actually more i have issues with the story but forgot to mention. all the main cast are too morally similar to the mc. there’s no character that isn’t on the opposing side that’s morally gray or with distorted morals. they’re all fundamentally what you could call good people but no one that’s just neutral or a bad person who does good things. the mc is lacking a member of the main cast that balances him out. a character like sojo as part of the main cast would’ve made the character dynamics a lot more interesting.
i think an amazing example of a well rounded main cast is the one piece crew. i’m not caught up past fishman island arc but each character in the crew is unique to themselves and have their own personal motives behind being in the crew that doesn’t necessarily relate to luffy until after they created a strong bond with the crew. examples of some of the crew’s motives: luffy -pirate king, zoro - best swordsman, sanji - find the all blue, nami - create a map of the world.
the main cast in this story doesn’t really have that at all like basically everyone wants the same thing without having an individual goal that just so happened to align with the mc yk
