She TRIED to love her baby, but because she felt like its mother's duty to love her baby, it only made her resent it even more. Her history with "duty" is the source of her vices. It was duty that made her have to get married at that age, duty to bear a child, and duty to be a filial daughter and not shame the family name. In the end all of her bottled up and unknown resentment manifested itself onto her child.
