I don't hate Cliff, I just felt sorry for him. He's being controlled by the author and despite everyone being freed, Cliff is the only one who can't be completely free not until the very end.

(My take) Cliff knew that Lize is the one trying to kill Edith and still help because that's how he was made as a character. He will love and do things for Lize even if it means killing someone. He's obsessed and his love is accepting everything about Lize and do everything for her.
But when Lize loses her complete control of the sotry and characters, I can see how Cliff been freed as he does not indulged Lize and being tired of her antics. He still gives what Lize wants because he does not want to fight an exhausting and unending fight with Lize who lost her rationality. I feel sorry for him that the only reason he can't divorce Lize is because of clause of the marriage contract.
I'm glad that Lize dug her own grave and freed Cliff from his marriage. If you would ask me, what happened to lize is more than satisfying than Edith taking revenge. Its more satisfying to watch your enemy ruin her own life than ruining it yourself.
