A Stepmother's Märchen
So the overarching background political plot revolves around the power struggle between the church and noble & imperial power. Cardinal richalue something or other wants a holy war to evangelize people and bc he thinks its his duty etc. he's super religious. The empress and Johannes were allies who realized the church needed to be kept in check and the church considered neuchwanstein to be a huge thorn in their side. When Johannes died, empress and the church both wanted to take over neuchwanstein family for their own cause. But shuri was in the way and successfully protected the family for Jeremy. When shuri is killed by the church in the first timeline, the church ie. riechalu set shuri up to be a martyr and triggered the holy war/ evangelical mission the church wanted. Empress is shown being upset that everything went the way the church wanted and that she was disappointed in shuri. In the present timeline, shuri is holding onto her power and the empress has somewhat acknowledged shuri after she successfully saved Jeremy's right hand in court. Cardinal richalue guy and the church are still trying to get rid of shuri and bc crown prince and Jeremy both like her, the church has extra ammunition to use against her. It so interesting how they've set up a huge shadowy political plot that surrounds the everyday slice of life sort of story between shur and the kids. Rachel and the safavid prince, Elias and the potential relationship with O'Hara even though she's 'supposed' to be with Jeremy Jeremy's growth and feelings for shuri and Nora's change and feelings for shuri. The underlying plot of the neuchwanstein guard captain who is unwittingly friends with the priest who is supplying information to the cardinal. The guard captain who was closeish with kids birth mom but in the first life feels guilty about shuri's death.
