I Have To Be A Great Villain

Ongoing | 木火然,云中 | 2000 released

Synopsis: When a deadly accident kills his friends, a system approaches Wang Yi (MC) with a contract: transmigrate into novels and take on the villain's role, and in return he can reverse that tragedy. However, the male leads (ML) somehow see through his acting, and they fall in love with Wang Yi instead of the female lead. The male leads all have a mind-reading ability; is there a connection between them? Review: Read up to 167. This manhua has colourful art, great comedy and an interesting storyline. The premise of accidentally romancing the male lead as a side character is not new in Chinese stories, but I find the male lead's mind-reading ability to be a fresh way to throw a wrench in the protagonist's plans. Furthermore, as the protagonist goes through each story, he uncovers the overarching plot and mystery. If you like the world-hopping genre, this manhua is a must-read.

A Tree Without Roots

Ongoing | LAPO | 2022 released

Synopsis: Growing up as an orphan in an abusive foster home, Kwon Heeseo (top) finds his solace in the anonymous person sponsoring him. The day he sets the home aflame is the day he finally meets Cha Taekyung (bottom). Although Taekyung tries to maintain a distance between them, Heeseo is obsessive and neurotic, willing to do whatever it takes to keep Taekyung by his side. The truth behind the death of Heeseo's mother unveils bit by bit, but at the climax, a fight causes them to separate. Seven years later, Heeseo kidnaps Taekyung, while the plot stemming from his mother's death continues… Review: This manhwa has a fantastic plot surrounding the mystery behind the death of Heeseo's mother. The cast of characters is tight and memorable, and there are many elements that return to relevance later. As for the main pairing, Kwon Heeseo is undoubtedly a toxic person who needs therapy, but he is only interested in Cha Taekyung. In a way, this gives Taekyung a concerning amount of power over Heeseo's psyche, but he's not equipped to handle such a troubled mind. I hope that their relationship improves!

Synopsis: Although he has been anticipating his discharge from military service, Colonel Kang Ha-jung (MC) is forced to stay so that he can guide and mentor the S++ rank esper, Kim Mu-hyuk. The day he dies on the field, he wakes up five years later in someone else's body. This is an opportunity for him to finally get discharged, but he can't ignore Kim Muhyuk, who is suffering without a guide. Review: We don't see much of ML yet, but he's already formed a great attachment to MC, even refusing the help of other guides for five whole years since MC's death. Personality-wise, MC is far different from a typical protagonist in any BL—as a colonel in his 30s, he holds himself seriously, acts rather jaded and shows no fear, even for his own life. The world-building is interesting, but for me personally, the main pairing does not entice me enough.

Even If You Don't Love Me

Complete | Pando | 2000 released

Synopsis: Obsessed rich top x poor bottom with inferiority complex. Ju Seung-eon (top) fell for Min Jiwook (bottom) at first sight and forced his way into becoming friends. Meanwhile, a two-faced sadistic scion schemes to steal Min Jiwook from Ju Seung-eon and ruin him. His machinations cause Min Jiwook to drop out of school and run away from Ju Seung-eon, but Ju Seung-eon vows to use everything in his power to bring him back into his grasp. Review: Because of the main characters' pride, they both make bad decisions that cause a lot of pain. They frequently betray each other and make decisions that only hurt their relationship and trust, and they take a long time to realise how important honesty and communication is. In particular, Min Jiwook suffers the most. He's doomed the moment the villain notices how much Ju Seung-eon likes him, but his refusal to accept help from Ju Seung-eon leads him to a life of trauma, poverty and sexual assault. Meanwhile, Ju Seung-eon has a bad personality, anger issues and a deep obsession for Min Jiwook; their relationship is incredibly toxic in the beginning, but Ju Seung-eon eventually learns how to be a bit more gentle, although he refuses to ever let Min Jiwook go.
