What does it mean?

I'm asking for a friend. So, my friend found out that apparently, everyone thought he was gay. This situation basically went like this:

"What, I thought you were gay."
"What? No."

Afterwards, he felt a strange sort of distance from his classmates. What does this mean? He wonders if his classmates were only nice to him because they thought he was gay.
