I get where you're coming from. When I told my friends about the fact that gender didn't matter to me at all...they kinda took it weirdly. Not that they thought it was a bad thing, but they just couldn't understand/ relate. I wouldn't hide it though, your sexual orientation is nothing to be ashamed ......
