Did you ever consider the author is using the story as a means of societal commentary? That taken to it's extremes would only serve to convey the underlying message of abhorant acts themselves are damaging? C'mon now. Horror isn't meant to be moral, like "oh murder and terror is bad..mkay" there's a deep psychological backing behind being afraid of......
