Setton one shot
Did I do something wrong? How did I end up in this position? These thoughts circle my brain as the man sitting opposite me stared directly at me. I couldn’t look away. It was like he was drawing me into his snowlike eyes. How could I get out of this?
“Let’s begin, shall we?”
Begin what? I just wanted to leave and run and escape. Get out of there. But something was keeping me there, attracting me to this man.
“What do you want?” I asked him.
He smiled softly at me. “Are you ready to go?”
“Go...where?”
“The afterlife, of course.”
I stumbled backwards and fell out of my chair. “T-the afterlife??”
“Yes. It’s time.”
“N-no! I’m not ready to go!”
The man chuckled. “I’m sorry. Would you like to see how you’re family is dealing with their loss? Maybe it would give you more closure.”
“No I want to stay alive! I have so much more to do I can’t die yet.”
“What did you have to do?”
“I-I was busy. I have a girlfriend, I was going to propose to her tomorrow. I even bought a ring and reserved a restaurant.”
“That’s lovely. Congratulations.”
“See I can’t die yet. She would be so upset.”
“Do you want to see her again?”
I nodded. “Yes. Bring me back to earth.”
The man smiled sadly. “I can’t. You can’t go back to living. Would you like to see how everyone is doing?” He offered again.
I began tearing up. “Okay...” I still had so much to live for why am I dead? How could this have happened?
The man took my hand and a bright light shined. Suddenly we were at my parents house. I went inside and tried to hug them, but instead I went right through them. “Mom... dad...”
“He’s dead?” My mom shouted into a phone. “Are you serious? Uh huh. Oh. Well thank you for letting me know.” She hung up and I expected her to fall to the ground in tears. I felt so bad for them.
“Mom-“
My father walked up and said “Good riddance am I right?”
“What?” I whispered softly.
“Yea I mean I was going to flush him anyway but it was too late for that.”
“Now he can stop wasting my money. You know he bought a ring for his girlfriend? I found that on the hill this month.”
“What? Oh god, those things are expensive. And it would’ve been pointless anyway she had been texting me she was going to break up with him.”
“Wait didn’t they-“
I stumbled back in shock and fell out the house.
“Are you alright?” The man asked me.
I shook my head slowly in disbelief. “C-can we go see her?” There was something I couldn’t quite remember and wanted to confirm.
“Of course.” We were suddenly at our house. She was packing up her things. That broke me, and I started crying.
Her phone rang and I didn’t hear anything accept her saying “I didn’t know he would take it that hard.”
Something added up to me.
“I remember now.” I stood up and looked at the man directly in the eyes. “We already broke up. That’s the last thing I remember before I died.”
“Do you remember how you died?”
I nodded and smiled at him, tears still in my eyes. “I guess... no one needed me anyway.”
He smiled softly. “Are you ok now? Would you like to see your body?”
A faint memory of a gun to my head ran through my mind. “No. I remember everything now. I’m ready to go.”
The man opened a portal. “Just go through there and you’ll find the afterlife. I’m sorry that all happened to you.”
“It’s all good. I was worthless anyway. Thank you. I hope I see you again.” And I walked through the portal.
I never saw the man again, but I hope i never forget what he said as I walked through the portal and I hope no one does. I never regretted much, but even a random guy caring in some way about me made me regret dying so much, I wanted to turn back around. I wanted to scream, to tell him I’m not ready to leave, I don’t want to die. Too bad no one told me this on earth. If someone did, maybe I would still be alive. The man told me “No one is worthless I’m glad you lived.” And with that, I became one with the universe.
