If you're talking about the textbook. Rather than good or bad... I do think it is a good idea to have a Genki if you are a beginner. Though I would say, you have to extremely motivated to give it a go.
You can get a clear idea of the grammar, writing and reading. And the lessons are also in English. reply
Well genki roughly means health or energy in kanji means good health. If you use it in a phrase 'Genki desu ka?' It translate to How are you?
If your referring to textbook it's not bad for beginners because i also have one and you can finish it in a short period. reply
