Probably interview them.
Try to get into their head and find out what could have gone wrong.
Or gain their trust, learn all their deepest secrets and then use those against them in a never ending battle of psychological warfare.
Whichever’s easier.
I don’t have a story or author I hate that much tho. So y’know..
