It's just people projecting who they want to be or how they want to be seen.
I don't like it because it's desperate and self-indulgent in a way that I find kind of pathetic.
Self-insert is a terrible term for it. I'd call it idealized-self-insert or smth idk.
Granted, imo, it doesn't mean it's always bad. Sometimes they can come up with interest......
