I mostly see the kind of 'edgy' behaviour on teens, usually 15-18. I don't know about your experience with people suddenly becoming edgy when they turn 18 years old though, but I'm guessing they're probably actually younger teenagers posing as 18-year-olds so the internet has to accept them or something.
