The best way to do it is by asking a question in my opinion. Not only does it show interest for the other person you want to converse with, it'll also give you the chance to join in the conversation depending on the question.
Another thing it'll help is the way you introduce yourself. It doesn't need to be extra or flashy just as long you let then......
