sent a letter to future me—maybe you should, too

in 2022, someone made a forum post about writing to our future selves through a website called futureme, and the letter would be sent to us on the date & year we chose. i couldn’t find the original forum post, and i never commented under it either. anyway, i wrote one for myself to be sent in 2023, but i forgot the name of the site and i don’t regularly check my emails, so i didn’t know how else i could find it.

then today, i found the website searched the name on gmail, and i did receive it. if anyone wants to write to their future self—maybe 1 year, 5 years, or even 10 years from now—here’s the link:

The following is a letter from January 05, 2022, delivered from the past by FutureMe. This was sent on December 12, 2023.

Dear FutureMe,
Hey, [redacted], it's me. Today is January 5th, 2022 and we have been in the COVID-19 pandemic for 2 years now. Some schools here aren't open yet. I'm not that smart, so I'm currently struggling with my studies, unable to focus and unable to understand. I really hope that schools will finally open this year, even though part of me doesn't want to go back because [redacted], but what can I do? Studying has become hard for me. [redacted]. Oh well, [redacted] take and I honestly don't know. I don't know what course I'll take in college. I don't know want to become in the future. I can't see myself in the future. I actually [redacted] this. [redacted] abortion illegal? I [redacted], even if it was illegal. [redacted] 'future.' I hope I'm still alive at the age of 18. I'd still be able to get this email and read it. Hopefully, things will be better than they are right now. I hate this life. I know that some people out there have it worse than me, but I just really hate this. It honestly seems like a punishment for me for [redacted].

well, 16-year-old me, it doesn’t get better and i can’t believe i actually wished to stay alive until 18. (gonna write a new one for myself next year and for 2028, because that’s the year i’ll graduate.)
