Bf wont sleep w/ his friend?

My bf just broke up with me because I asked him to sleep with his best friend to spice up our relationship. Was asking that really that big of a deal? I told him i would sleep with someone else if he wanted me to, and he got mad and stormed out. Was i in the wrong? My friends all say yes, but i still dont think so.
