The shit Disney gives us is pathetic, like look at these same-sex characters kiss waaaaaaaay in the back, among other straight couples, where you need someone to point it out, where you don't know the characters, and you don't care about them, and you won't see them after that 1s scene. But somehow we get blamed every time a Disney movie flops, like, get off our backs.
The movie didn’t flop because it was original, queer, or had an ugly animation style. It failed because of poor publicity and the shift to streaming. People just aren’t willing to pay theater prices for a Disney movie that will be on streaming a month later. A Disney plus subscription is $15 month and you can rewatch the film anytime for much cheaper than spending $30–$80 on a single theater trip for a family of 3.
“Turning Red” for example didn’t do well at the box office but performed extremely well on streaming. “K-pop Demon Hunters,” also an original story, was made for streaming from the start meaning there was no wasted investment for a theater realease and it even broke music records and became the most watched netflix movie globally. In contrast, Elio suffered from very minimal marketing. Disney still needs to release films regularly to produce some sort of revenue, but when a movie touches themes they don’t want to highlight, they give it barely any promotion just like they did with “Strange World.”
