I've literally only seen fried food like that at state fairs and they are meant as like gag foods. No one actually makes stuff like that to eat daily. Fried Shrimp is popular anywhere just like fried chicken is though so I'm not sure why that was shocking. And Fried pickles are common in the south, I've seen them at seafood restaurants here in Flor......
