I think it got called BL even without the anime. People stopped calling it BL till the author said it's not a BL. Also, there are a lot of BLs that are not just "BL," so I don't know what you mean. Mo Dao Zu Shi is mostly plot, but it's a BL. And I think because the author didn't like Hikaru's doppleganger and Yoshiki's relationship being romantici......   reply

i have seen this alot with mangas/anime with gay relationships. like if there was a straight relationship in a thriller/horrror etc manga, it wouldn't become just a romance manga but the moment there's a gay couple, people reduce it to just being 'BL'. i feel like that's the reason the mangaka says it's not a bl. Man I guess it boils down to how we dictate a piece of media should be consumed by others, mostly to have others consume in wat we deem is the morally righteous way. Personally I love the anime, so far I'm in love with the way they incorporate anime style with absurd realism, and the music is sooo fucking nostalgic and good as well, I loved the man......   reply

Ever since episode 2 and 5 came out, there’s been a lot of allegations of the body fist scene as an allegory to rape/SA, which I believe is an INSANE take. As a long time manga reader I have never seen any manga onlys interpret that scene to that other than internalized homophobia on yoshiki part.
