Why do we like BL
Sorry for the long post you guys, but I really needed some insights from y'all to untangle my own psychology about BL. Maybe you guys can give me your insights as well!
I am trying to put into words why
I like BL. At first, I thought it was wish fulfillment without a woman being in the equation. When I ask women why they enjoy BL, they say they like seeing men express emotions, love and sexuality without women being in the equation. Because women in her media usually take on a weaker role, feminine role, maybe sexual violence against her is shown.
Women consuming BL don't have to deal with that 'ick' feeling of seeing another woman. I thought to myself, okay, maybe I just don't like seeing women in my romances. Maybe I do want wish fulfillment of a romance with only two men. And the point of reading a romance for me is to experience all the romantic emotions without actually doing anything sexual.
But then I look at the stuff I typically like -
Two huge masculine men
Reversible couples
Masculine bottom x Pretty looking top
Theoretically I should like the typical small uke x big top dynamic since that would match my preferences more in real life. I have no desire to dominate a man and would rather be submissive. I wonder why it is I like the stuff I like.
So I'd like you all to share your thoughts so I know how you think.
I dislike the way women are commonly portrayed in straight romance. Personality and looks. Somehow very unrealistically skinny while having huge breasts and are often needy.
When both characters are equals the story is more enjoyable for me because it feels more realistic.
That being said, I still read straight romance and I still dislike BL’s......
