I feel like people nowadays use a lot of really fancy words that mean a very specific thing they don't understand for a wide variety of issues they don't think about. Male gaze is literally just a shorthand for audience not being expected to view a female character as a person, but as an object. It doesn't matter how skimpy her outfit is, if the story explores her inner world, stances and character. If you're meant to try and view the world through her eyes, then it's not male gaze.
