I'd say main difference is art and source. Back in the day most bl, usually called yaoi, were mostly mangas. Because of that shotas were way more common than now. The rapey plots were just as common though. For some reason we still haven't evolved from such "plots". The art wasn't all that important. Been reading since the popularity of Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, Junjou Romantica soared the BL spaces. Pros: 1. Much more BL content compared to the previous years.
