Old Yaoi/BL(2000-2010s). Dark Ages of BL. How did it influenced you?
Let's have an in-depth discussion about this. Especially with BL readers of 2010s. The 2010 has served as up with BL with fucked up concepts like Rape, Forced Sex, Questionably pedo, questionable pairings, the Kabedon, The No means yes BL mentality.
Someone is asking about super lovers to trigger this topic. Nowadays, people are quick to point out it is pdf manga but way before.. ethics about super lovers age gap is a highly debated topic with actual readers justifying the fact that Haru and Ren age gap.
So, I wanna ask how did the old yaoi fucked you up too??
remember "viewfinder?" (or "you're my love prize in viewfinder") i tried to read it so many times back when it was popular but just couldn't get into it bc of the rape. same w other popular yaoi manga. so weirdly enough,, problematic tropes don't seem to have shaped me much. i hated rape, pedophilia, etc. back when they were even more rampant than ...... 1 reply
I don't think it's influenced me at all. I've read lots of controversial manga across all genres, not just bl, but none of them ever bled into my real life morals or values. They were just stories to me. But I'm not sure I'm a good case study overall, because I found "yaoi" (and porn in general) at a later age than a lot of you. I imagine things ar...... reply
i would say that most of us that read yaoi back then didnt care much or didnt think too much about it!( honestly i would say we had other things to worry about) now with social media and everything more people of all ages read bl and maybe overanalize everything, even on the comment section people jump to conclusion without even reading the whole m...... reply
I love this question because yaoi has seriously changed SO MUCH.
Honestly don't feel it influenced me at all. The primary reason I started reading yaoi/bl more was because I found regular romance/shoujo so unrealistic that it was impacting my mental health and making me really depressed, because men like that don't exist irl (remember ladies, the...... reply
Idk, I think shoujo did more damage to my views on romance than yaoi ever could lol
Yaoi had the more easily identifyable fucked up shit, shoujo had a lot of insidious ideas that made their way into my brain without me noticing.
(Though I guess blaming shoujo specifically or even romance media in general for warping my way of thinking is unfair s...... reply
Didnt fuck me up but there was this one anime, pretty sure it was a few episodes only and yea there was dubcon. But it was interesting bc in the manga as they progressed and are together for a long time, as they have sex there was a lot of implications that the bottom wasnt like.. against sex(? But it was more indifferent to it(? Like he liked the ...... 1 reply
idk i think straight ecchi had more impact on me, cuz i watched Kiss x Sis as a middle schooler and now i have a piss kink :(
i enjoyed stuff like Papa to Kiss in the Dark and Loveless (honestly couldn't get into Super Lovers) but still thought it was fucked up for a hs senior to try dating a hs freshman or an adult to pursue a hs senior, so i th...... reply
It’s so crazy to think that almost every bl back then consisted of sa or rape…tbh arguably there’s less sa and rape in bls casually put as “sex” scenes today.
Anime/comics like sekai ichi were my one of favorite (unfortunately that was peak to me when I was a kid) and it was one of the bl’s that had the least harsh sa scenes of bl back ...... reply
It didn’t really affect me because I started reading when I was 18 and even though 18 is not the magic number, at least it was “age appropriate”.
My first graphic series I read was Fake and I can’t even remember how graphic it is. If I remember correctly, the sex scene happens in volume 7, which is the last volume.
Anyway, back in the day I...... reply
