I'm not American but as far as I understand it, a basic calculator is allowed because math is not just about how fast you can do simple operations like addition or multiplication, that's something elementary school kids need to be tested on. Having a calculator doesnt magically solve the problems tho? Also their exam formats prioritize answer over process, so you could've done 99% of the problem right yet fail bc you missed a step or apply a formula perfectly but it was the wrong one bc the prompt wasnt specific enough   reply
