i really wanna learn how to play violin, but i'm not 7 or 8 yk. The fact that it is literally the hardest instrument to play doesn't help either. I am not ashamed of being an adult beginner lol, but i gotta hide it from my parents (there's a couple of years till i move out). Idk man, seeing all the prodigies really make me wanna quit before starting, but then again, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I don't even know if there are quiet violins, like the ones that don't make too much sound cause i gotta keep it a secret. Call me crazy but doing something outta my own, not asking for permission and not having to explain my actions is such a thrill for me. Like, the explanation for me wanting to play is that violin is cool and i wanna play it period.

I’ve been playing violin for 10 years and those kid prodigies make me feel like a complete failure too lol don’t let that discourage you everyone is that their own pace as well as I am
but as for quiet violins that’s not really a thing, but you can get something called a violin mute it’s like 5$ it’s basically a piece of plastic you put it on your violin and it makes it quiet, it’s for like practicing in hotel rooms and places where you have to be quiet but I have one and it’s awesome espically when I’m at my parents house lol
Not sure why you have to hide it from your parents in general I don’t know your life situation but i suggest start off with getting some lessons so you can learn how to tune, hold the bow and violin properly and proper fingerings

Take a class! It's never too late. Just prepare yourself to be really bad for a while. Some instruments will sound ok even if you don't know what you're doing, but violin is not one of them. There will be squeaking and squealing, but that's ok! It's all part of the learning process!

Yo, I too am an adult who was thinking about learning violin. I'm a little different to you because I did learn a bit when I was a kid but I was bloody awful. I still have my old ass violin but it sounds like a cat dying everytime I try to play it lol. There are electric violins btw, idk if they're expensive but you can look into that. Anyway I believe in you man. For me, even though there are a lot of prodigies my personal goal is just to be good enough to play some songs that I like. I hope you find a way to play o7
