when i was a poor student i gave my friend a notebook i hadn't used yet with a cute heartfelt little letter written on the first page and she still says it was one of the best gifts shes gotten.
it really is the thought behind the gift that counts but maybe little bookmarks? if you have clear tape you can even laminate them to make them durable.
