America is a individualistic society. We value independence and prioritize ourselves. Whereas in other countries they may be collectivist. For example, in Japan, they value others more than themselves. I guess the leave when 18 culture is due to tradition and other factors but I don't really feel like writing all that. lol. I don't think it's right......   1 reply

It’s genuinely either college or toxic parents or rebellious kids idk why it’s normalized, it shouldn’t be continued bc imo if you’re 18 you’re still a teenager and shouldn’t be expected to just work ur ass off ur entire childhood just to be able to survive when ur fresh 18 idk to me it’s weird and shouldn’t be normalized.   reply

Funny enough, I do believe this is a dying stereotype. I think this was more common in the past when the economy was favorable to young adults but that’s not case anymore. Most young adults are unemployed and living with their parents just to get by. Food is expensive, rent is crazy high, and unemployment rate only keeps rising. Leaving at 18 is ......   reply

I think it has to do with the parents. My entire family has never followed the "leave at 18" That only happens in families where the parents are kind of shit and just want their own lives back. The kind of parents in my family for the most part say to stay until you're ready to succeed on your own. It's more get a job and we will be here for you so......   reply

That's not only a thing in America; it's pretty common here in the UK as well. I nearly got kicked out when I turned 16. Some of my friends at the time did get kicked out It happens here because of people's kids start getting older, they become more of a burden for them since they stop getting support from the government (benefits and such) So they......   reply

My experience with this was not b&w. It wasn’t sudden, it was something you knew was coming and were preparing for. I did the college route and still was welcomed home on the summers as long as grades were good and I had a job. Not exactly asking the moon there. After graduation i moved across the state for a few years but with no family and ......   reply

It depends tbh. At 18 you are still a teen. If your parents throw you or tell you to move out then they are shit parents. If i had kids i would support them until they are financially stable and they feel prepared to leave, no matter how long it takes. Depends on your parents and your upbringing tbh. I still live with my parents, I work but I also......   reply

It’s a common stereotype and something depicted in media, but I think it has to do with cultural background. For example, I’m Hispanic and I didn’t grow up with the looming threat of having to leave home as soon as I turned 18.   reply
