Thinking about it the best thing for me is practice and research, I don't want to do allat (as accounting and computer sci already forces me to do) but yeh it makes sense I'll just focus on finding writing prompts first to test my current skill and get to reading all the novels I put to the side. Open up a horror story and write down all the writing conventions you see. If you don't wanna read, listen to an audiobook.
