i have seen this alot with mangas/anime with gay relationships. like if there was a straight relationship in a thriller/horrror etc manga, it wouldn't become just a romance manga but the moment there's a gay couple, people reduce it to just being 'BL'. i feel like that's the reason the mangaka says it's not a bl.
