It’s a storytelling problem, not an audience problem. It’s the author’s job to get us, the audience, to care about the sex. Authors’, or whoever, are just making lazy storytelling decisions. Using the talent of the artist showing graphic sex to carry the story, instead of good storytelling getting the audience invested.

I think a main issue is that people don’t really know what a fetish actually is and what it actually means to fetishize groups of real people.

There are psychological issues that can develop seemingly without much warning in your 20’s and 30’s. Like schizophrenia.
Or they could have had a diagnosis like bi-polar disorder but it can get much more severe during that age range as well.
