Lately, I’ve been getting so annoyed by side couples taking over a manga/manhwa/manhua, whatever, that I’ve started developing an irrational irritation toward them. Which, obviously, I can’t let happen. They’re everywhere these days, in every form of media, so I’m trying to regain my appreciation for them.
So, guys, drop all your favorite side couples. As many as you like. We’re making this a Side Couple Appreciation Thread, mainly so I can learn to love them again
They can be super minor couples too, that’s fine. Just give me the ones you think are at least one of these:
particularly well-written,
don’t steal the spotlight from the main pair,
or are just plain adorable.

For example, some people love the boss-lady type, others prefer puppy-like leads, or even niche side characters that follow a certain pattern. Do you have any character archetypes you instantly like? Feel free to share your collection of favourite characters that fall in those types if you want, it’s always fun to swipe through pictures!

Hey everyone!
I’ve read A Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity up to the latest chapter, and I’m desperate for something even remotely similar. Someone asked about it on the main page a while back (twice!) but got no answers, so I’m taking my chances here in the forums in hopes someone might know!
I’m looking for a story with a similar vibe, preferably slice-of-life school life, where the main characters belong to two opposing groups/schools/factions that don’t get along, but they themselves are never hostile to each other. Instead, they fall in love (or start to understand each other) despite the divide, and maybe even become the reason their sides start seeing eye to eye.
No fantasy or supernatural elements, please.
It can be BL, GL, or straight romance, I don’t mind at all, as long as it captures that same heartwarming, cross-the-divide feeling. ANYTHING REMOTELY SIMILAR! PLS!
Any recs are appreciated!

Gimme your examples of power couples. It's fine if they aren't some crime-fighting heroes. You can give me any couples that you dub as power couple.

This is about people that consume ONLY straight manhwa/ga btw. So don't jump me. Even I read straight works bruh. Shoujo is my fav genre.
This is just me venting okay. Fell free to ignore it.
Since we’ve already dragged strictly BL readers before, let’s now turn the spotlight on strictly straight manhwa/manga readers, because honestly, they don’t get nearly enough judgment.
Tiktok, Insta, and Twitter really bring out the worst side of every fandom. Like, explain to me why whenever I see an edit of a queer manhwa/manga, there’s always someone in the comments saying things like, “Oh, please tell me this isn’t GL/BL,” or “Not another one of those.” Seriously? Even when two women are feeling each other up, or two guys literally have their tongues down each other's throats, people still act shocked and beg for it to be straight. They are obsessed with the concept of queer media...
What’s even funnier is that these same people then turn around and leave comments under straight edits like, “Thank God this is straight” or “Finally, not another BL/GL.” As if queer media is somehow everywhere. Newsflash: the default in manga and manhwa is straight. There are tons more straight stories than queer ones. You’re just feeding your own algorithm with those comments and then blaming queer media readers for doing the exact same thing. The call is coming from inside the house.
And don’t get me started on the religious ones. They’ll say, “This goes against my beliefs,” or, “I can’t read this, it’s a sin,” while simultaneously consuming straight smut like it’s nothing. Since when was porn religious? And besides, you’re not uneducated or illiterate. You know commenting only brings you more of that Algorithm is a thing. If you don’t like it, just scroll past. It’s not that hard.
Even worse, most of them barely read any queer works at all, yet feel the need to give their “educated” takes and dismiss actual readers of queer media. Let’s be real: most of them just want to hate. And unfortunately, a lot of them are openly homophobic, casually misogynistic, or even closeted, but it shows, especially in the hentai corners of the internet. (Even here on mgg. If you dig through the straight smut corner, you'll definitely find a few lurking around)
The double standards are wild too. I once saw someone defend Matthias (a manipulative, cheating, rapist character) but call another manga “disgusting” simply because the girl was the top and the guy was the bottom. When called out, their defense was literally, “Of course a sodomy defender would say that.” Like, you can stomach manipulative, toxic men, but not a simple role reversal?
Then there’s the way many of them pile on side female characters (Rashta, Claudine, Cosette, the og Raeliana and more) often without any real attempt to understand them. Yet these same people accuse BL/GL readers of consuming “misogynistic media.” Sorry, but misogyny exists in every genre. Straight stories just happen to be a breeding ground for even more of it because of how common they are. You’re not standing on some moral high ground here.
And let’s not forget how quick they are to accuse queer fans of “gayifying” characters, while doing the exact same thing themselves. Just look at that somewhat recent Twitter drama, where people (especially the dude-bros) kept insisting Hikaru was straight because of a look he gave Satou. Their whole argument boiled down to, “He looked at her with red eyes, so it must be straight.” Like… no. He wanted to kill her. That’s not romance. Your bigotry even influenced your media literacy?
At this point, it’s not just hypocrisy, it’s willful ignorance, and it’s exhausting. I wish there was a word to use for these people, just like we call strictly BL readers fujos...

What kinda fictional couples do you instantly like?
Maybe it's the bantering couples.
Maybe the enemies to lovers.
Maybe the idiot/blushing couples.
What's your favourite?

Give me all the shoujo sweethearts you adore, whether it’s one, two, or a whole list, I’d really appreciate it.
Lately, I feel like I can only enjoy a story if I know the main characters are genuinely good. If the characters are great, I’ll eat it up no matter how bad the plot is. And right now, I’m really craving some shoujo mangas sooo...

Give me all the second leads you wish had won instead of the ML/FL, or just second leads you loved in general. And if you want, tell me why you love them! I adore hearing people gush about the characters they like.
