I started giving my characters more tragic backstories, when I wanted to give them more depth and prevent them from being 1 dimensional.
I ended up overdoing it way too much with giving characters tragic backstories.
Eventually I realized there are other ways to give my characters more depth, than just giving every single oc a tragic backstory....... reply

My dad will take me to pick out a cake in the morning.
Then later my friends, my aunt, my uncles, and my cousin usually come over and we eat pizza and the cake I picked.
This year was awesome because my aunt got me Gushers in bulk for my gift.
