I believe hand sanitizer would be okay, but it's not advisable to pierce at home as infection is possible. Wear gloves or at least make sure your hands are clean when doing this. If it's not your ears you're piercing I recommend not doing it at all. When I was in HS 3 girls pierced their belly buttons and all 3 got hellacious infections from it.
